EVENTS
Aug. 10, 2024, 7pm
In-Store Performance: A Typo I Feed Iris Noll w/ Max Gude
Not Donuts will host an evening of ambient electronic music by Shaun Phillips, a.k.a. A Typo I Feed Iris Noll. Things start off at 7pm with a solo experimental guitar set by Wassaic's Max Gude.

“A Typo I Feed Iris Noll presents an evening of hypnogogic music. Gateways into dreams pleasant and otherwise… golden utopian drones give way to bleak factory noir landscapes, then drop into sheer Dadaist nonsense as a familiar stranger winks back at you from the blind spots of your mind.”

OFF THE RECORD: An Exhibition of Art, Books, and Records
For Upstate Art Weekend 2024, Not Donuts presents OFF THE RECORD, an exhibition organized by Natalie Beall and Pierre Le Hors. Taking cues from 1980s DIY culture—the heyday of mixtapes and fanzines—the exhibition seeks to draw connections among New York and Hudson Valley-based artists whose work has a kinship with sound and the printed page.

Each artist has been asked to contribute an artwork, a publication, and a record, to be displayed non-hierarchically on pegboard walls with site-specific hanging hardware designed by Natalie Beall. The included records will be played continuously for the duration of the show, and a printed zine serving as catalog will be available to the public. Participating artists include Natalie Beall, Katie Bell, Samantha Bittman, Elisa Lendvay, Joshua Marsh, CJ Matherne, Sean McCarthy, Brent Owens, Megan Pahmier, Eric Palgon, and Michelle Rosenberg.

Thursday, July 18 | 1 PM - 6 PM
Friday, July 19 | 11 AM - 6 PM
Saturday, July 20 | 11 AM - 6 PM
Sunday, July 21 | 11 AM - 6 PM

Rage Peace Mixtape Party #5
The enchanting Taraka returns to Not Donuts to lead our local coven in conjuring a unique aural entity—a communal mixtape. The theme... Sonic Spell! Bring a record to share that’s witchy. Otherworldly. Magick. Could be anything from an obscure occult private press, some dusted voodoo, synth seance, or channeled transmission from lemuria. Interpret as you wish.

Page of Wands Candles will be providing custom-made candles and scents and together we will sit by flickering light and weave a sonic spell from vinyl
crackles and cassette tape ribbons.  At the end of the night, a live communal mixtape will be created out of everyone's ritual offerings.

DIAS FUTUROS: Argentina
On Saturday April 20th (which is 4.20💨and also Record Store Day), musician/composer and friend of the shop Max Gude  (www.instagram.com/gudemax/) will host “Dias Futuros,” the first Not Donuts travel vinyl listening party.

Max recently went to Buenos Aires to score a movie and, like any respectable music head, spent a significant part of his trip hitting record stores and flea markets in search of interesting records. Come hang out, have a Fernet con Coca and listen to his finds and what he learned about Argentina and its music. Should be a good time, and hopefully the first of an ongoing series. Refreshments will be served.

Based off of the idea of the vacation slideshow parties our parents or grandparents used to have, the travel vinyl listening party is a gathering of friends assembled to share and enhance the experience of travel—but through records/music instead of pictures/images.

Rage Peace Mixtape Party #3
Finally getting the band back together! Bring a record (or select one from the shop), hang out and help create a communal mixtape. The theme of the night will be "HEALING."  As always, hosted by Taraka. In a time of so much uncertainty and chaos, how can we bring MORE light?  MORE healing? Even on a level as small as a mixtape? For this mixtape party, I invite you to take the plunge and find a song that has been a  personal "medicine song" for you in some way.  Don't overthink it. Healing can take many different shapes and forms. Any piece of music that has helped you during a dark time is worthy of sharing.

P.G. Six - Murmurs & Whispers
Record Release Party/In-Store Performance

Not Donuts is excited to host a release party for Murmurs & Whispers, the new album by P.G. Six, out 9/1 on Drag City. Copake resident Pat Gubler (aka P.G. Six) will be perfoming live in the shop and then will stick around to play his new album, share a drink and chat. Festivities will begin at 6:30p, and given the shop's size, space will be limited so come early!

"The return of P.G. Six’s deep acoustic focus, a devotional style honed from childhood ongoing. Pat Gubler’s salad years of playing the harp pay off after a one a few decades — here, he plays his Triplett Celtic model with pristine fingerwork and heavy soul. Evoking worlds, generations and future waves radiated from the folk tradition, Murmurs & Whispers finds P.G. at an apex of his special talent for earthly sounds with transcendent aspirations."

Audrey Golden - I Thought I Heard You Speak
Author Reading/Book Signing
Not Donuts will host Audrey Golden for a reading/signing of her new book, I Thought I Heard You Speak. Come pick up a copy, meet the author and then stick around for a listening party of Audrey's collection of rare Factory records.

"Factory Records has become the stuff of legend. The histories of the label have been told from many perspectives, from visual catalogues and memoirs to exhibitions. Yet no in-depth history has ever been told from the perspectives of the women who were integral to Factory’s cultural significance.  The untold history of Factory Records is one of women’s work at nearly every turn: recording music, playing live gigs, running the label behind the scenes, managing and promoting bands, designing record sleeves, making films and music videos, pioneering sound technology, DJing, and running one of the most chaotic clubs on the planet, The Haçienda.  Told entirely in their voices and featuring contributions from Gillian Gilbert, Gina Birch, Cath Carroll, Penny Henry and over fifty more interviewees, I Thought I Heard You Speak is an oral history that reveals the true cultural reach of the label and its staying power in the twenty-first century."

Rage Peace Mixtape Party #2
We were so blown away by the magic of the first mixtape party, we decided to make this a more regular happening. Since it is Memorial Day weekend, the theme for this next mixtape will be "REMEMBER". Bring a song that helps you remember... remember... remember what you may ask? There is no right or wrong answer. Perhaps it helps you remember a lost moment in your life. Or a fleeting feeling. Or a specific person. Or God. Or Satan. Or the way a tulip smells in snow. Or a philosophical credo to live by.  The interpretation is up to you. I look forward to hearing the magic we create.

Artist Album Covers
Not Donuts presents Artist Album Covers, an exhibition curated by Jared Rosenberg from his collection of record albums with cover art by well-known visual artists.

As a child, Jared Rosenberg always collected, first bottle caps and matchbooks found for free, and then more substantial objects, such as hats and Swatches. Records and then art ultimately became his twin collecting passions, so naturally the intersection of the two—artist album covers—holds a particular interest.

The collection is not by any means complete and it is not meant to be. Records tend to be added on the basis of the cover artist more than musical artist. Thus, the process often results in exposure to previously unheard music and expansion of musical tastes.

Included visual artists (alphabetically from top left to lower right):
Josef Albers, Lisa Alvarado, Cory Archangel, Tauba Auerbach, John Baldessari, Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Larry Bell, Trudy Benson, Harry Bertoia, Matt Connors, Martin Creed, Jean Dubuffet, Natalie Du Pasquier, Sam Falls, Elise Ferguson, Kim Gordon, Michelle Grabner, Wade Guyton, Marcia Hafif, Keith Haring, Adam Henry, James Hoff, Simen Johan, Chris Johanson, Ray Johnson, Daniel Johnston, Mike Kelley, Josh Keyes, Margaret Kilgallen, Sol Lewitt, Micah Lexier, Robert Longo, Robert Mangold, Christian Marclay, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Barry McGee, Richard McGuire, Landon Metz, Julie Mehretu, Yoshitomo Nara, Kenneth Noland, Albert Oehlen, Raymond Pettibon, Jackson Pollock, Steve Powers, Gerhard Richter, Bridget Riley, Kent Rogowski, Ed Ruscha, David Shrigley, Frank Stella, Wolfgang Tillmans, Fred Tomaselli, Mimiyo Tomozawa, Victor Vasarely, Andy Warhol, Lawrence Weiner, Christopher Wool, B. Wurtz.
